How to choose the right bike size

The wrong frame size is the most common mistake when buying a bike. A bike that is too big or too small tires you faster, strains your back and knees, and simply isn't fun to ride. The good news: finding the right size is easy.

Why frame size matters so much

The frame sets your body position on the bike. The saddle and handlebars can be adjusted, but only within the limits of the frame. With the right frame size you are in control, you sit relaxed and you pedal without unnecessary strain.

Size chart by height

Mountain bike frames are usually measured in inches, city and road frames in centimetres. Use this chart as a guide. Manufacturers differ, so always check the chart for the specific model.

Your heightMountain (inches)City / trekkingRoad
150 – 160 cm13 – 14" (XS)46 – 49 cm47 – 50 cm
160 – 170 cm15 – 16" (S)50 – 53 cm51 – 53 cm
170 – 180 cm17 – 18" (M)53 – 56 cm54 – 56 cm
180 – 190 cm19 – 20" (L)56 – 59 cm56 – 58 cm
190 – 200 cm21 – 22" (XL)59 – 62 cm58 – 61 cm

A more precise way: inside leg length

People of the same height can have different leg lengths, so your inside leg measurement (floor to crotch) is a better guide:

  1. Stand barefoot against a wall with your feet 15 to 20 cm apart.
  2. Place a book between your legs and lift it gently to your crotch, as if sitting on a saddle.
  3. Measure the distance from the floor to the top edge of the book.

Multiply the result in centimetres by 0.226 for a mountain bike size in inches, by 0.66 for a city bike and by 0.70 for a road bike (in centimetres). Example: with an 80 cm inside leg, a mountain bike frame is about 18" and a city bike frame about 53 cm.

Three quick checks on the bike

  • Standover: straddle the frame with both feet flat on the ground. There should be at least 2 to 5 cm between the top tube and your crotch, more on a mountain bike.
  • Saddle height: with the pedal at its lowest point, your leg should be almost straight, with a slight bend at the knee.
  • Reach: your arms should be slightly bent at the elbows, without stretching your back or feeling cramped.

Between two sizes? If you like a nimble, sporty ride, go for the smaller size. If comfort and stability on longer rides matter more, choose the larger one.
